Fatherhood & Motherhood Doesn’t Make You a Daddy & Mommy
By Dennis W. Forbus
There’s a difference most people don’t talk about—but everyone feels. Becoming a father or a mother happens in a moment. Becoming a Daddy or a Mommy happens over time. One is biology. The other is relationship. And children know the difference—long before they can explain it.
The Title vs. The Role
A birth certificate can give you a title. But it can’t give you presence. A title says, “I brought you into this world.” A role says, “I’m here to walk through it with you.” Too many people assume that providing food, shelter, and rules is enough. Those things matter—but they don’t build connection. They build structure. Children don’t just need structure. They need someone inside the structure with them.
What Makes a “Daddy” or “Mommy”? It’s not perfection. It’s consistency. It’s not control. It’s connection. It’s not authority alone. It’s availability.
A Daddy or Mommy is someone who:
- Shows up even when they’re tired
- Listens even when it’s inconvenient
- Apologizes when they’re wrong
- Stays calm when emotions run high
- Chooses the child over distractions—again and again
- Kids aren’t measuring how much you earn. They’re measuring how often you see them.
Presence Over Presents
Children don’t spell love “L-O-V-E.” They spell it “T-I-M-E.” You can buy toys, trips, and technology—but none of it replaces sitting on the floor, making eye contact, and being fully there. A child would rather have: 15 minutes of undivided attention rather than 3 hours of distracted parenting. Presence builds trust. Trust builds influence. Influence is what shapes a child’s life.
Discipline vs. Relationship
Discipline without relationship creates rebellion. Relationship with discipline creates respect. Rules matter—but if your child only knows you as the enforcer, they won’t come to you when life gets hard. They’ll hide. A Daddy or Mommy doesn’t just correct behavior. They understand the emotion behind it. Instead of asking, “What’s wrong with you?” They ask, “What’s going on inside you?” That shift changes everything.
The Power of Being Safe
Every child needs a safe place. Not just physically—but emotionally. A place where they can:
- Fail without fear
- Speak without being shut down
- Cry without being shamed
- Be themselves without earning approval
- When a child feels safe with you, they won’t have to search for safety in the wrong places later.
You’re Building More Than a Childhood You’re shaping:
- Their confidence
- Their relationships
- Their self-worth
- Their future decisions
The way you respond today becomes the voice they carry tomorrow. If you’re harsh, they may become harsh with themselves. If you’re present, they’ll learn what love looks like. If you’re consistent, they’ll learn stability. Parenting isn’t about control in the moment. It’s about influence over a lifetime.
It’s Not Too Late
Maybe you’re reading this thinking, “I’ve messed this up.” Good news—you’re not finished. Children don’t need perfect parents. They need real ones.
Start now:
- Spend intentional time—even if it’s short
- Say “I’m sorry” when needed
- Ask questions—and really listen
- Put the phone down
- Show up again tomorrow
- Consistency over time can rebuild what distance has weakened.
Final Thought
Anyone can become a father or mother. But becoming a Daddy or Mommy? That’s a choice—made daily. It’s in the small moments. The quiet conversations. The times you choose connection over convenience. Because at the end of the day, your child won’t remember everything you said… But they will remember how you made them feel. And that’s what defines the difference.
